Kyoto International beat Tokyo's Kanto Daiichi 2-1 in 10 innings in the final of the national high school baseball championship Friday.

The Kyoto-based former ethnic school affiliated with South Korea that teaches students to be trilingual in English, Korean and Japanese captured its first title in the tournament held every summer at the historic Koshien Stadium.

It became the first team from Kyoto to win the tournament since Heian won in 1956. Two left-handed pitchers of Kyoto International, Rui Nakazaki and Ikki Nishimura, allowed a total of only six runs in six games from the first round.

"I was impressed by these boys," Kyoto International manager Noritsugu Komaki said of the winning team. "We had no choice but to face up to the situation (in the bottom of the 10th) and regroup. We escaped the jam with strong determination."

"I just wanted to play baseball with these boys as long as possible. To be honest, I couldn't imagine that we would make it all the way. Our offense is not so good, so we stayed patient and defended well."

The championship game was scoreless after nine innings. Under the tournament's tiebreaker rule, runners were automatically placed at first and second base to begin each extra inning.

Kyoto International brought home both of the automatic runners for a 2-0 lead in the top of the 10th on a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom half, Nishimura, who relieved Nakazaki, struck out Shintaro Sakamoto for the final out with the bases loaded after Kanto Daiichi got within a run.
